Employment in Brookvale Healthcare

Karen currently works as a carer at Brookvale House, our flagship Home, having been with the Home for 17 years. Though she has worked as a Senior Carer and as Manager’s Assistant at the Home, Karen’s current role allows for maximum flexibility in her personal life also.

“I always knew I wanted to work in care but it was only after having undertaken work experience in a Care Home, a general hospital, and in a school that I knew that I most enjoyed looking after elderly people.

Just before I joined Brookvale House, I had been working at another Home for the previous two years but found that I wanted a change. When I was offered a role here, I thought I would see how it went but I have always been happy here, and so here I am 17 years on!

Being in care for almost 20 years, I have seen many changes in the industry. At Brookvale House, I believe we have very good standards of care. However, there have been many changes in the way that the resident’s care is managed and the approach carers are required to take, for instance, in relation to resident’s rights and choices. To help us stay on top of all the changes, the Group ensures we are trained in all relevant areas. Some training is done by the Care Manager, and in other areas, we receive external training through a college.

In terms of what I like most about my role, it’s the satisfaction I receive from the care that I provide – it’s very rewarding when you’re helping people to be happy and comfortable.”
